ICB - THE INTERNATIONAL CHAIR IN BIOETHICS

The Establishment Of The Chair

On June 24th 2001 an agreement was signed by the Director-General of UNESCO and the Rector of the Haifa University, Israel, concerning the establishment of a UNESCO Chair in Bioethics at the International Center of Health, Law and Ethics, University of Haifa.

The Purpose Of The Chair : To coordinate and stimulate an International Network of Institutes for Medical Ethics Training, associating higher education institutes in both the developed and developing countries, and to develop an up-to-date syllabus for medical ethics education which will satisfy the requirements of medical schools in the world.

The above agreement with UNESCO has expired, and the Chair has become an independent international organization. The Chair is recognized by leading international organizations. An agreement of cooperation was signed between the Chair and the world medical association (WMA) as well as with other international bodies.

OUR VISION

OUR VISION

The vision of the Chair is to create, produce, develop and promote the education and training of medical ethics in particular, and of bioethics in general, in the field of health.

The Chair is a voluntary international organization established to realize the vision of the Chair as described above.

A "unit" of the Chair means a group of professionals who are willing to assist in realizing the vision of the Chair within the framework of the Chair. The "tools" of the Chair are education, teaching and training of medical ethics and bioethics in the field of health. The most effective way to use these tools is to operate them in health care institutions. These are universities, colleges, schools, faculties, departments and similar bodies, such as: schools of medicine, nursing, social work, dentistry, philosophy and ethics, psychology, psychiatry, and the like.

As part of  the administration he led and served for many years as President of the World Association for Medical Law. As part of his teaching, he has lectured at many universities on the five continents. The theme and vision of bioethics education grew and developed by Prof. Carmi during teaching in medical schools. In international studies conducted by him, he has noticed the failure of the accepted teaching method of medical ethics.
